4 Cottagecore Decorating Tips and Tricks
Top Content
Whether you’re new to Cottagecore or you’ve implemented it and need some additional help, we’re here to give you our expert advice. Here’s what to expect in this article:
- Stick with what you have and what’s natural in the living room
- For the kitchen, stick with wooden accent pieces and patterned tea towels
- Don’t neglect the small bathroom and add accents and small rugs
- Neutral base coloring for the bedroom then build from there with accents
Living Room
For your living room, try to accentuate the natural features of the home. If you have a wooden floor, don’t cover it with carpet and, if you want a rug, opt for one that color contrasts well with the wood grain. For darker woods, think lighter rugs and for lighter woods, go for green rugs.
If you want to get a table for your living room, make sure the one you choose is wooden. Plastic, glass or metal will not work well with the theme and can add a modern vibe. Wooden table and chair sets are perfect for dining rooms, and they can be paired with soft backed chairs if needed, to really add to the softer, cottage look. Cottagecore decorating is about embracing softer tones, and natural elements, so try to avoid soft backed chairs that are deep hues and, if you can, get some throw pillows in light greens, yellows and even blues.
For the lighting in your living room, you can try a light fitting with a wooden base, or one that has a vintage or antique look. Check out our chandeliers and light fittings at the Antique Farmhouse which will blend in perfectly with your cottagecore décor.

Kitchen
For your kitchen in your cottagecore home, it is also going to be about highlighting the natural elements, so skip the metal surfaces if you can. Instead, embrace a wooden cutting board, and if you have the room, a kitchen counter cart, which is a great prep space and looks great too. As for utensils, you can’t beat a wooden butcher’s knife block, and if you can, get your hands on some knives, forks and spoons with wooden handles. If you can’t, then stainless steel will work fine.
You can’t have a cottage kitchen without tea towels! Rather than opt for the plain ones of the modern era, why not take a look at our botanical cotton tea towel set? This will add a touch of elegance to your kitchen, add to the cottage vibe and will also be great for catching spills.
It may seem counterintuitive to put patterned wallpaper up in a kitchen, but hear us out!
With cottagecore decorating, you have the option to go for neutral or plain walls, or you can double down on something pastel, often with imagery of plants, butterflies and so on. In a kitchen, why not go for the latter? Even if it is only on one wall, this can add a pop of color to your kitchen and will add to the cottage vibe perfectly.

Toilet
Are you lucky enough to have a small downstairs toilet that you want to add a cottage feel to? Start with the basics. Try to get a tissue holder for the top of the toilet, or to place it on the windowsill. At the Antique Farmhouse, we sell a woven tissue holder, which can add warmth and elegance to your small space with ease while also adding to the cottage feel. Next, look at the toilet paper holder and, if you can, try to get a wooden option to hold your toilet rolls.
If you have plain wooden floors, you may want to add a small rug to your downstairs toilet. We have the perfect solution in our mini bathroom rug, which will cover the space neatly and add a rustic feel to your downstairs toilet.
If you have the wall space, it is also worth looking into a small, wooden cabinet (usually with a mirror) placed above the toilet. This will remove clutter from the space and provide functionality to your downstairs toilet.

Bedrooms
Your bedroom is the ideal space for some cottagecore decorating and it is so simple to bring the simple elegance in. You will need to start with a neutral base color for the walls, or, if you are going to have a set color scheme, you can opt for soft pastels.
Your bedding is the ideal area to introduce some prints and textures, adding to the cottagecore theme. Check out our cottage bed skirt, as well as our throw pillow covers and bedding sets.
Accessorizing in a bedroom with cottagecore is all about natural materials. Try to get exposed wooden wardrobes, bedside tables and drawers. If you want to hand a mirror, try to choose one with clean lines and for wall prints, try to avoid colored or patterned frames. Keep it crisp and keep the wood exposed, or painted white.
